We can’t talk about the most influential Black leaders in history without examining the record of Sojourner Truth. Who are these influential Black leaders? Who are these Black heroes we should remember and honor? Sojourner Truth Photo provided by the Massachusetts Office of Tourism, licensed under Creative Commons, and made available by Flickr () These ten influential Black leaders advanced civil rights, reshaped American law, wrote the next chapter of literature, attained the highest political office in this land, and reset the conversation on racial justice in the midst of a pandemic. Still, we want to provide some inspirational examples of influential Black leaders who changed the course of American history. If we were to try to list all the greatest Black leaders in history, we’d be here for a very long time. Fierce Conversations will be especially helpful to you if you have trouble: expressing yourself, talking with others who have trouble expressing themselves, dealing with passive-aggressive people, or resolving an ignored issue people know exists. A “fierce conversation” brings authenticity into your life as you communicate who you are and what you believe.įierce Conversations will get you to have the most important conservation you can have with someone, right now. As written on the book’s cover, “fierce” means robust, intense, strong, powerful, passionate, eager, and unbridled. When people see the word “fierce”, they may think pain, tough, or brutality. It’s important to overcome whatever barriers we face in communication because a conversation is not about the relationship – it is the relationship. Author Susan Scott details the exact methods for the conversations we know will change our life, but we procrastinate having usually because of fear. If you’ve ever felt the need to have an important conversation, but couldn’t bring yourself to it, this book is for you. This is a book review of Susan Scott’s Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work & in Life, One Conversation at a Time. And Maeva's adoring husband, Pieter, wants nothing more than for his new family to be accepted by all. Maeva tries to hide the girl from the suspicious townsfolk of the austere village of Ørken, just as she conceals her own magical ancestry from her daughter. Upon every turn of season, her mother, Maeva, worries as her daughter's peculiarities blossom-inside the root of the tiny child, a strange power is taking hold. In the hinterlands of old Norway, Leidah Aldestæd is born blue-skinned, with webbed hands and feet. They don't feel the danger coming, riding in on the wind. An utterly gripping love story set in nineteenth-century Norway, about a woman rescued from the sea, the fisherman who marries her, their tiny and unusually gifted daughter, and the shapeshifter who follows their every move, perfect for fans of Alice Hoffman, Yangsze Choo, Eowyn Ivey, and Neil Gaiman. Isn’t that a bit extreme? What do you mean by theocracy?Ī: I mean a state where law and policy are based on the sacred texts of a single religion, and government officials purport to speak to and for God, thus claiming the mantle of divine authority. So the book begins with these facts, and then tells a fictional story: a story of how, influenced by extreme fundamentalists, the Christian right could succeed in implementing a theocratic agenda in America, and what life would be like if they succeeded.Ĭhristian Nation also challenges the reader to think about how they as individuals would react if this started to happen the book is fundamentally about personal responsibility in the face of a great social or political evil. The Christian right has worked for more than three decades to acquire political power in America they’ve already succeeded in high jacking one of our two major political parties. It shows how the Christian right could obtain power, and what they would do with it if they got it. Q: What is your novel, Christian Nation, about?Ī: The novel is fundamentally about the danger of complacency in the face of religious fundamentalism. Stone's hypotheses are radical and challenging to the accepted views of antiquity, and as such they remain controversial. Her other major work, Ancient Mirrors of Womanhood collects stories, myths, and prayers involving goddess-figures from a wide variety of world religions, ancient and otherwise. It describes her theory of how the Hebrews suppressed allegedly goddess-based religions practiced in Canaan and how their reaction to what she asserts as being the existing matriarchial and matrilineal societal structures shaped Judaism and, thus, Christianity. She spent a decade on research before writing the book published in the UK as The Paradise Papers and then in the U.S. (According to the author's information on the 1976 Harcourt edition of When God Was a Woman) From 1958 to 1967 she worked as a sculptor, exhibiting widely and executing numerous commissions. She taught at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Merlin Stone became interested in archaeology and ancient religions from her study of ancient art. Merlin Stone is a sculptor and professor of art and art history, perhaps best-known for her feminist book, When God Was a Woman. Unbeknownst to Lyta, Daniel is recovered alive and well by Morpheus' servants, the raven Matthew, and a restored Corinthian. In many places, Lyta is depicted as Medusa and even encounters Medusa's two sisters, Stheno and Euryale. The Kindly Ones also continues several other stories, including that of Cluracan of Faerie and his sister Nuala that of the Corinthian and that of Rose Walker and her former landlord Hal.Īfter Daniel is kidnapped by Loki and Robin Goodfellow, Lyta, his mother convinces herself that Morpheus has killed him and resolves to destroy Morpheus and finally persuades the Erinyes to do so. It pulls together various threads left dangling throughout the series, notably the grudges against Morpheus of several characters: Hippolyta Hall the witches themselves the Norse god Loki and the witch Thessaly. The most structurally ambitious of the collections, The Kindly Ones is a single storyline written as a Greek tragedy, with Morpheus as its doomed hero and an aspect of the triad of witches, the Erinyes, as the Greek chorus. The Kindly Ones belongs with the second collection, The Doll's House, and the seventh, Brief Lives, in that it finishes off a story that mostly originated in these collections but includes elements of Season of Mists and the story of Orpheus, told mostly in Fables and Reflections. The Kindly Ones consists of The Sandman issues #57-69 plus Vertigo Jam 1. Given that everyone at Roc had a whole lot more experience selling books than I did (this was my first sale, after all), I took their advice and made the change. The publisher had a concern that seeing a female name on the book cover might result in some readers passing the series by based on assumptions of what it would probably contain, so they asked me if I minded using a gender-neutral acronym. Urban fantasy tends to skew toward female protagonists (which is pretty awesome, actually), and lately has had a lot of crossover with paranormal romance, which this most definitely wasn’t. That’s the elevator pitch.Ī: Well, the books are told from the first-person point of view of Fortitude, who is a guy. Despite his reluctance, he gets pulled into the family business, and ends up partnered with a foxy kitsune shapeshifter, and they fight crime. Special thanks to Penguin (Ace/Roc/DAW) publicist Nita Basu for helping to facilitate this interview.įor readers who aren’t familiar with the books in the Generation V / Fortitude Scott series, would you mind providing your hook for the series?Ī: Sure! Slacker millennial with a degree in film theory which leads to a series of dispiriting minimum wage jobs is also a vampire, and a vegetarian. ML Brennan was kind enough to take time out of her schedule to take part in this e-mail interview with Rob Bedford. And the chances aren’t great that they ever will. Mostly… except for the two opposing members who haven’t found a way to coexist. The only fly in their ointment? The neighboring Blythe brood of ninja bunnies who steal their jobs and show them up on the regular.Īfter years of in-fighting, the Moreno and Blythe families have found a tentative peace and mutual respect after working together to bring down a group intent on revealing the existence of shifters to the world. Whether they’re working as a group or alone, they are a tight unit who protect their own. It’s the family business-they fight together, they die together. Summary: Watch out for the Assassin’s Claws… but be even more aware of the Ninja Bunnies!ĭan Moreno is a paid killer, just like his four brothers. Character Identities: Information not available This year’s conference theme is fitting for London, Ontario, Canada, as London is located on the Thames River (originally the Deshkan Ziibi or Antler River), which is traversed by many bridges. Birds connect science with Indigenous traditional knowledge, and people from all walks of life have a passion for birds. Birds also help link ornithologists with the broader birding and natural history community, through our shared passion for observing birds. Being a joint conference between the American Ornithological Society (AOS) and the Society of Canadian Ornithologists/Société des ornithologistes du Canada (SCO-SOC), we felt it important to acknowledge the living link that birds represent between our respective societies through our shared research and conservation interests, but also because of the link they represent between our two countries and others through their awe inspiring migrations and population distributions that span geo-political borders. This year’s conference theme is Birds as Bridges. |
